It was held by the famous Irish freedom fighters the O'Briens, after they took it from the rival clan - the MacNamaras, who had actually built it. The castle was object of battles, for influence and just causes. And the many local wars it suffered brought it ruins many times. It was finally restored in its present state by Lord Gort in 1960. Since then visitors freely explore its mysteries and stories of glorious times. An interesting collection of 16th-century furniture is exposed together with some historic objects from various époques.

The castle is entered from the Folk Park, which represents a typical Irish town set in its original authenticity. The area was entirely reconstructed to take you back to ancient times and spice your trip with the temper of the lively Irish spirit. Visitors are welcomed in all the houses and small crafts shops in the area. The Folk Park also invites to its traditional cafes and pubs. Just next to the castle you will find the most popular local pub, the Durty Nelly's. Some great regional specialties are served in a cheerful atmosphere and the owner Nelly, who is an old woman now, will still give you a warm welcome. Just next to the pub the Avoca Handweavers offer you wonderful knitwear and further exploration of local crafts traditions.
