Dun Laoghaire Overview
Taking the train from Dublin it will take you only 15 minutes to get to the coast town of Dun Laoghaire. A vibrant resort town and administrative center of the County, it offers the comfort of a modern tourist destination and authentic old Irish atmosphere.
The town was called Dun Laoghaire, which means 'Fort of Laoghaire'. Laoghaire was the Irish King who ruled the place centuries ago. Later on with the English domination, it was renamed to Kingstown and kept this designation until in 1920 when the local authorities voted for the original name to be restored.
Dun Laoghaire has retained most of its old medieval buildings and historic sites concentrated downtown. One of the most picturesque parts of the town is undoubtedly the Harbor. It offers views to the endless blue where the sea touches the horizon and along the coastline to the town medieval landscapes. It is one of the major Irish ferry passengers ports. Trips with a boat along the coastline and into the sea are a must. Yachtsmen will be delighted by the opportunities offered. Back in time Dun Laoghaire used to be a small fishing village and its traditions are still alive. Fishing is allowed all along the coastline as well as at the lovely piers. Maritime atmosphere is also felt in the urban landscape dotted with palm trees and enjoying mild climate. In hot summer afternoons swimming in the cold sea waters will recharge you with fresh energy - and there are several safe beaches where swimming is a top delight.
The town itself offers both historic and modern attractions. One of the most fascinating among them is the National Maritime Museum with its varied and interesting collections. A 12 Screen Cinema Complex has been recently opened to assure pleasant evenings before you go to some of the numerous traditional pubs or wild nightclubs. The town also offers plenty of shopping areas, excellent restaurants and sport facilities to cater for an unforgettable stay on the beautiful Irish coast.
